The Principality of Andorra is an independent country situated high in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, covering an area of 468 square kilometres and has about 82.000 inhabitants.

It is worth mentioning the great diversity of Andorra’s population. Native Andorrans and those who have acquired Andorran nationality form only 34% of the population. Spanish passport-holders make up 42%, the third largest grouping is Portuguese, followed by the French but nearly 10% of the population come, literally, from all over the world. We have people from all over Europe, the Commonwealth and from all of South America, some Arabs and South Asians. Indeed, the International Club of Andorra has members from 35 different countries!

The official language of Andorra is Catalan, but Spanish and French are the predominant languages.

The Principality consists mainly of three large mountain valleys in the form of a Y, through which the three biggest rivers flow – the North and East Valira Rivers join together in the main valley of the capital to form the Great Valira River, all of them bordered on each side by high mountain ranges. These features make for a country of dramatic natural beauty.

The highest point in the country is the peak known as the Coma Pedrosa, which is 2.947 metres above sea level and the lowest point is the Runer River at the Spanish border at 840 metres.

Legend has it that Andorra was found by Charlemagne the Great in the year 805, in recognition of the assistance provided by its population in stopping the advance of the Saracen invaders.

The first documented evidence concerning Andorra is in the Act of Consecration of the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Urgell in 839, which talks of the Parishes of Andorra being in feudal fee to the Counts of Urgell which were then ceded to the Church of Urgell in exchange for some land in the nearby Cerdanya. But it was not until the 12th Century that the Andorrans recognised the sovereignty of the Church over them in an agreement signed in 1176 with Bishop Sanç.

This agreement started a century-long dispute which caused the Bishops to seek help from the local strongman of the House of Caboet. However, through various marriages over the years, the House of Caboet became allied to the House of Foix and Béarn.

During the 13th Century, the dispute between the Bishops of La Seu and the House of Foix over the Valleys of Andorra became violent and intense and hostilities only ceased when both sides finally agreed to the co-sovereignty of the Bishop of La Seu d’Urgell and the Count of Foix over Andorra, by means of two feudal agreements called the Pariatges signed in 1278 and 1288. Thus was Andorra born.

Andorra was controlled under this feudal agreement for just over seven centuries and it was only with the creation of the Executive Council in 1981 that the most recent and decisive reforms came about, which eventually culminated in the collective desire of the Andoran people to enact a written Constitution.

It was not until the 14th of March 1993 that this was finally achieved by referendum and, uniquely, Andorra remains to this day as the only country in the world that has two constitutional Co-Heads of State – the Bishop of La Seu d’Urgell and the heir to the Count of Foix, nowadays the President of the French Republic.

Administratively, the Principality of Andorra is divided into seven parishes, which, in order of protocol, are:
Canillo
, Encamp, Ordino, La Massana, Andorra la Vella, Sant Julià de Lòria i Escaldes-Engordany.

Today, the Principality of Andorra has transformed into a tourist country par excellence, offering an enormous range of tourist accommodation, including holiday apartments.
